Showing Sustainability on Your Restaurant Website: How to Win Over the Conscious Guest

Légumes et fruits frais de producteurs locaux, photographiés d'en haut

More and more guests choose consciously: local, seasonal, with an eye on food waste. Yet on plenty of restaurant websites, sustainability never gets further than a logo tucked away in the footer, or doesn’t appear at all. That’s a missed opportunity, because this story is often exactly what tips the balance for a guest torn between your place and the one down the street. In this article you’ll read where to show sustainability on your site, and how to make it concrete instead of just slapping on a badge.

Why sustainability increasingly tips the scale

A growing group of guests checks more than your menu and opening hours before they book: they want to know what you stand for. Do you work with local suppliers? Is your menu seasonal? Do you think about food waste? Those questions matter most when a guest is choosing between several similar places nearby: at equal price and quality, the story behind the kitchen is often what decides it.

Where to show it

Sustainability only convinces once a guest actually comes across it on your site. A few spots that work well:

  • Next to your dishes on the menu: name the farm, grower or region behind a dish, the same way you already show allergens and dietary needs next to a dish.
  • On your about page: explain in a few sentences why you choose local or seasonal sourcing, and what that means for your kitchen.
  • Next to certifications: if you hold a label like Green Key or a Michelin Green Star, don’t just place the logo; add one sentence on what it actually means.
  • In the reviews on your site: guests who mention your sustainable approach themselves are more convincing than anything you could write about it.

Concrete beats a logo

“Sustainable” is a word that, on its own, says very little by now; almost every business claims it. What works is making it concrete: not “we work sustainably”, but “our vegetables come from a grower ten kilometres away” or “we adjust our menu by season to cut down on waste”. One concrete sentence per dish or section convinces a guest faster than a page full of unexplained badges.

Sustainability and being found by Google and AI

A guest searching for “sustainable restaurant in [city]” increasingly types that question into an AI assistant instead of Google. The same rule as with AI visibility in general applies here: only explicit, readable information on your own site counts. If your sustainable approach only lives on a card on the wall or in an Instagram post, an AI assistant can’t pick it up. If it’s written as text on your site, it can. Fill in your Restaurant Context with your cuisine and region too, so that context feeds into local and AI search.

How to get started

  1. Name where the ingredients come from for a few signature dishes.
  2. Describe on your about page, in a few sentences, why sustainability matters to your business.
  3. Explain what a certification or label actually involves.
  4. Let guests mention your approach themselves, in their reviews.
  5. Work with concrete examples, not loose claims or unexplained logos.
