Extra Revenue

Extra Revenue for Your Hotel or Campsite: Selling Day Packages, Extras and Late Check-out on Your Website

At a hotel or campsite, extra revenue isn’t about a dessert or an extra drink, it’s about everything around the stay itself: a later check-out, breakfast in the room, bike hire for the day, or a relaxing spa treatment. The trouble is that most of these extras only come up at the front desk, once the guest has already booked and there’s little margin left after a booking channel has taken its cut.

Why this works differently for a hotel or campsite than for a restaurant

A restaurant earns a relatively large share of extras within a single visit: an extra starter, a bottle of wine, a dessert. For a hotel or campsite it’s different. A guest usually books weeks or months ahead and spends several days at your property. That gives you far more moments to sell extras before arrival, during the stay and even after check-out, as long as the guest actually sees those options. Hide them until check-in, and you miss most of that revenue.

Which extras are easiest to sell on your own website

  • Day packages and deals, such as a spa or cycling package with breakfast
  • Late check-out or early check-in
  • Breakfast, half board, or a breakfast hamper delivered to the room or pitch
  • Bike or e-bike hire for a day or the whole stay
  • Extra beds, a cot, or a pet fee
  • A parking spot, an EV charging point, or extra storage
  • Excursions, activities, or tickets for nearby attractions
  • Gift vouchers for a stay or a package, to give as a present

How to set up packages and extras on your website

You don’t need to build an entirely new booking system to start. A few focused steps are enough to set this up within your existing Sitebite website.

  1. List your extras and set a fixed price. Anything you currently offer verbally or ad hoc can just as easily be defined in advance and sold.
  2. Build a clear packages page. One overview with deals, prices and what’s included works better than scattered mentions across your site.
  3. Connect extras to your booking widget or booking engine. Let guests tick an extra or package while booking, instead of asking about it only on arrival.
  4. Sell gift vouchers for stays and extras. A stay or a package makes just as good a gift as a dinner out.
  5. Send a pre-arrival email with upsell options. In the days before arrival, a guest is most open to an upgrade or an extra.
  6. Track what works and adjust your offer. Which extras guests actually book varies by season and by audience.

Don’t let the booking channel take the margin

Sell your extras only through Booking.com or a similar platform, and you’ll pay commission on those too. Work towards More direct bookings, less OTA commission, and you sell those extras directly through your own website while keeping the full margin yourself.

Make it part of your whole website

Extra revenue doesn’t stand on its own. A well-priced Menu functionality for hotel and campsite restaurants makes a breakfast package more appealing, and Seasonal content that works for your campsite or hotel helps you put the right package in front of guests at the right moment: a ski package in November, a cycling package in May.
